Fete & Fun Day 2016

The charity for this year’s Fete & Fun Day was the the Cheltenham Animal Shelter.

Beavers and Cubs faced several team challenges for the main competition. Other activities at the event included the rock climbing wall from The Warehouse, monkey bridge, archery, bouncy castle and various other stalls.

As well as the various activities on offer to the young people there was also a raffle with proceeds going to the Animal Shelter.

St George’s Day 2016

On Sunday, Scouts from across Cheltenham gathered in Whaddon Park to celebrate St George’s Day.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Network and Leaders all met up to parade to All Saint’s Church for a service with a difference – including a camp fire inside! All the Scout Groups from across Cheltenham were represented in an annual get together to celebrate the adventures of the past year.

Over 300 young people attended the service, which included the awarding of the Bob Lyle Trophy to Black Sheep Explorers for being the fastest Cheltenham team in the Cotswold Marathon this year. The Cotswold Marathon is an overnight hike in February, with participants having to deal with rain, freezing temperatures and navigating in the dark – a true test of skill.

Rachel, from Prestbury, also completed her Queen’s Scout Award at the service and so next year will take part in the national parade at Windsor Castle for those who have earned the top award. A Queen’s Scout Award is the culmination of years of work and helping others.

Even the youngest members got a chance to take part. Celebrating 30 years of Beavers, 40 years of girls in Scouting and 100 years of Cubs, Jack, a Beaver from Swindon Village said:

My favourite activity is water fights, because I love running round and getting wet!

Cheltenham Scouts are always on the lookout for new people to help offer life changing experiences to young people. Volunteers are needed not only to be leaders, but also to help behind the scenes so if you have a couple of hours spare and would like to help please get in touch.

Fete & Fun Day 2015

Fete & Fun Day is an annual event which started in 1992 with a National Scout Fund Raising event for Scouting in inner cities. It was decided to hold this as a Tea Party in Montpellier Gardens, Cheltenham but with added competitions for the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. This was so successful that it became an annual event. The competitions for Beavers and Cubs are based on various challenges. This year, the various team challenges included: filling a bucket of water with a cup, obstacle courses and different games each year. This year, the various team challenges included: filling a bucket of water with a cup and obstacle courses. A tent pitching competition was also included for the Scouts.

The event was extended so that all Scout Groups within the District could have their own fundraising stall. We also include outside attractions to join us and have always made use of a climbing wall from The Warehouse, Gloucester which goes down well with the young people!

There is a refreshment tent which sells teas, cakes and another selling hot food. The profit from these tents help fund the complete Fete.

In addition, there is also a raffle, of which the proceeds are always donated to a local charity. In previous years, we have given donations to the cobalt appeal, special care baby unit, hearing dogs for the deaf, to name but a few. This year the proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion Branch in Cheltenham who provided fantastic support at this year’s event. Generally we are able donate about £500.

On average we have about 100 – 150 young people taking part in the activities which include the challenges and various stalls run by Groups.

St George’s Day 2015

A fantastic parade and service to mark St George’s Day. The service was based on the theme Scouts help others and we saw several amusing sketches on this theme. We all renewed our promises and several people received awards from the County Commissioner, Paul Trott, including an Explorer being presented with their Gold DofE. Pat Hopes, the District Commissioner, was at Winsor Castle to be presented with her Silver Acorn.
